Pretty: A Poem

Pretty: A Poem

“It is amazing how complete is the delusion that beauty is goodness.”
— Leo Tolstoy

She was pretty,
She was funny too,
Her laugh was contagious
with a spirit made of fire,
Not earthly fire,
The kind that burns within the sun
She fuels herself,
Radiates from the inside out

She was pretty,
But she was clever too
Her thoughts were all her own
Not scholastic intelligence,
The kind that makes you want to crawl inside her mind and find your way to her heart

She was pretty,
But she was loving too,
Not passionate love,
The kind of forbearing love that endures,
The love that makes you believe in something,
Nothing in particular,
Just something more,
Something new,
Something better

She was pretty,
But her soul was a masterpiece,
A work of art to be revered,
Alluring,
Captivating

She was pretty,
But that didn't matter,
She was so much more.

No object is so beautiful that, under certain conditions, it will not look ugly.
— Oscar Wilde
